Dr. Laura Windham founded Chrysalis Psychotherapy for Women in 2001 after moving to
Philadelphia from Chicago. Her desire to start a private practice that specifically
addressed the needs of women grew out of her early work experience in Chicago, where
she worked with sexual assault survivors. Her interest in women’s issues
continued unabated while she completed her MSW in Chicago, and upon her arrival in
Philadelphia she saw a unique opportunity to begin a practice that would allow her to
help women heal and grow through self-exploration. Not long after Chrysalis was
established the counseling centers at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple
University, and The Renfew Center all began referring clients to Dr. Windham; they have
come to rely on her experience and expertise in the areas sexual assault, interpersonal
difficulties, eating disorders, trauma, and sexual orientation. Dr. Windham’s
clients appreciate her sensitivity, good humor, and casual therapy style as well as her
willingness to challenge them and offer insight or direction. Colleagues praise her
commitment to her clients and unflagging drive to better serve them by actively keeping
up with current literature and research. Dr. Windham’s dissertation research was
nominated by the Council of Graduate Schools for the Distinguished Dissertation
Award.
Over the past 20 years Chrysalis has grown from Dr. Windham practicing alone to a dynamic group practice, with psychologists who specialize in treating the many varied challenges women face today including dating, marriage and family, female anger, women of color issues, GLBT issues, and executive coaching for women. It is no surprise then that Dr. Windham was named one of five Women of the Year by RealPhilly magazine in 2006.
